Things I hope Cancun has

I plan to live in Mexico by the end of the year but always thought of Cancun as a place to catch the bus to Merida or spend a few days at the beach. After reading this forum, I realize I might be missing a good place to live. Any info on these items would be helpful:
1. Is there a town square? They are great spots in e or other gathering place where the locals go in the evening. In Vera Cruz, Merida, San Miguel and other towns, the plaza is full of music, food, people of all generations, etc.
2. How about street food? It's so good in Puerto Vallarta and San Miguel that there are reviews of the stands.
3. Is there a breakdown of neighborhoods on this site or another site? I'dlike to get a handle on what areas are close to the bus line, how far from centro, etc.

Thanks for any info that pops up here.

 

Mexipat:

1: There are usually stuff going on at Parque Las Palapas and/or the municipal palace("palace", hehe).

The latter one seem to host more serious stuff, such as protests etc, whilst Las Palapas have more of the entertainment-type stuff, such as dancing, big group-weddings, boxing(that was freaking awesome!) and such. Its all free as well.


2: Parque Palapas has a fair amount of food and snacks and such. Just dont expect the magical stuff that you find in DF, Tepoztlan, San Miguel Puebla and such..

3: Buses traffic most areas to be honest. Dont know where to find an overview though, sorry.

 

Cancun isn't like the colonial cities most think of when they thing of Mexico. No zocalo to speak of and no colonial architecture because it's such a new city.

There's great street food to be found, but as Steve said, not magical. Well, there are a few places that I consider magical, but not to the degree that one would find in other places.

The neighborhoods aren't named as in other cities, but numbered. Pretty much all neighborhoods are on bus routes except for some really fancy expensive ones that are probably newer.

Cancun has its own charms, but they're quite different from what draws people to colonial cities.

hi, yaxchilan has blocks of local restaraunts and bars close to palapa park and ado bus, we meet with other forieners at la taberna on fridays when we are there. look for scott from cancun assist. 50- with a beard. enjoy

Thanks for the info. By now, I should know better than to expect colonial city amenities at the beach. It sure would be great, though.
