I wouldn't risk it with a Taylor. And I agree with hedoaddict, I'd be more worried about messing it up at the resort than on the plane. I've got a lot of dings and scratches on mine from banging it on stuff while I'm drunk. Also, a cheap guitar doesn't mean it's gonna sound like total crap. My $100 guitar that I bought in college sounds and plays better than my more expensive one.
Does it really matter which guitar is brought...everyone is gonna be too drunk to notice if one plays better then the other
The more I drink, the less my fingers respond to where my brain is telling them to go. At 3 in the morning I could make a $10,000 guitar sound bad. And I try and sing which is just painful.
Last April it rained for a few days. I couldn't take the electronic "music" at nice shoes after two nights of it. (That stuff is like a dentists drill with no freezing to me...lol) When we woke on the third day Kim asked what I wanted to do. "Go buy a guitar", I said. So we headed off to town to get one (In my avatar). We took over the lobby seating area that night, since it was still raining, and had a blast with the group of people that grew through the evening. Last September I brought my trusty old Guild. It's been a lot of places with me over the years. Big old dreadnought that projects well. I played it a few nights at Paty'o's, once the resort music was turned off. It was a hell of a lot of fun! I have taken it to Mexico, Chile, Jamaica, all over the US and Canada. The case looks like it has gone through a war. No handle now... just a strap I put on it. But the guitar has suffered no damage. Continental lost it once, in Yuma, but brought it to me the next day. That was scary. That's been my experience, anyway.
I wouldn't trust any one of my guitars to any airline - never mind a Taylor. Besides the risk of airline damage/loss, there is a very real possibility of theft (it won't fit in your safe). Not to mention accidental damage from hauling it around amongst a bunch of partiers. Its like gambling - don't bet more than you can afford to lose. My 2 cents.... This video is very funny - and based on a true event. If the link doesn't work (I'm doing this from work and YouTube is blocked), just search "Jim Carroll United Breaks Guitars" on YouTube.
