Tabata is being abused right now by people in the fitness industry that are trying to look for the next edge to beat their competition. It was put together in response to the japanese olympic speed skating team's fitness level. Originally they looked at large muscles quads glutes, but now you see people encouraged to be doing it with curls tricep press etc and too many are gettnig hurt.
i got what you said, deb i know that everything works better when you drink your water and are not dehydrated. my problem isn't that i drink pop instead of water... my problem is that i don't drink. period. i have a cup of tea in the morning, and then the rest of the day, maybe a few sips of water here and there. i just don't get thirsty or something. i don't drink pop or juice or anything. so i am very very convinced that my body just doesnt work properly, as i seem to continually moisture-starve it! (oh, and i live in colorado, so its not like theres ANY humidity for my skin to soak up either) when i die, as soon as they drain all the fluid from my veins, i'll probably just crumble like an old cracker at the touch of a finger. haha! (drinking a glass of water as i type this)
I have started this on the treadmill.. but I am just running .. as fast as I can for 20 seconds, then rest for 10 sec then 20 seconds.. I did it for 10 minutes with a warm up and cool down .. so time on the treadmill was 15 minutes.. but in 15 minutes I burned almost the same amount of calories as 30 minutes regular treadmill.. I liked it .. made me feel like I had a good workout .. and becuse i am a smoker.. 20 seconds is about all i can run full out ..haha!
there's always going to be the latest exercise craze, and diet fad (and computer, and electronic gadget, etc)... its how the world works. And there's always going to be something wrong with all of them. I'm not looking for anything perfect, and i'm definitely not doing any 'real' training/weight lifting/extreme exercise that i'll really hurt myself with... so for me, something like tabata is a good thing... it's getting me moving and making my heart pump.
I have a bottle of water on my desk... chug chug.. I know what you mean about not drinking fluids I'm terrible for drinking water, its just been this last couple weeks I've been forcing myself to drink. Right now my morning starts out with 2 cups of hot water and 3tbsp of lemon juice, then coffee, after about 3 cups, then its water and green tea.. And it takes alot for me to get that water in I have to force myself, I've even got to counting 20 mouthfuls for 500 ml bottle I try and chug it. When I get home its red wine for me... the hell with the water by then. LOL. Like you, I will be dust in the wind when I die...
that is how I feel as well for people that go from not exercising to exercising .. something is better than nothing.. and being consistant even it if only 3 times a week..it does help, it will burn calories if you get you heart rate up and it will make you feel better..
I'm sorry deb that wasn't a dig at you. It's just many times it has been said that drinking water would burn fat. I was just stating that it wasn't true but that drinking water had many benifits. Sorry if you thought i was attacking you. wasn't my intention
Sorry cutiepie. What I meant is that tabata is good when itis applied as the research suggests but healthclubs are not paying attention to the research and creating needless injury due to poor application.
Well since you are doing it it you might as well know how to go at it properly. You need a few minute warm up and then the 20 and 10 cycles. But your output on the 20 is max at the higest resistance you can manage for your workout time. In the 10 you are at a rate below the max (warm up plus). There is 2 cycles in a minute. You do 4 minutes for one leg. Now you have a full minute of recovery (low resistance). You need 4 legs minimum plus a cool down. The olympic guys tried for 8 legs with many crashing in their 7th. Now you need a full day at least for recovery. This creates a BIG post exercise oxygen deficit. (you are supposed to pant while you are doing it). This deficit drives fat burning long after exercise is over. Be warned this is serious exercise and you should have cardiac clearance before you take it on. It does make huge VO2 max gains. The threadmill is not bad but you can see with all the resistance changes why a bike or an elyptical might work better.
so 4 cycles(sets) of 4 minute 20/10 cycles with one minute rest inbetween cylces (sets)? with my treadmill I run full out as fast as I can for 20 sec.. then I just jump off (on the sides) for 10 seconds.. because my treadmill isnt capable of changing that fast.. am i gonna kill myself stoping for 10 seconds..it seems ok..
