In this age of satellite radio, multi-track sound systems, etc. how come the pilot to tower communications still sound like Edison's first recording?

 

Have cultures always had abbreviated names and terms of endearment?

Did Caesars boyhood buddies call him "Cese"? Did his wife call him "Infans" (Latin for "Baby")?

Really... isn't it kinda important that pilots and towers hear each other clearly? The sound quality is ridiculous. Hand held walkie talkies are clearer. lol
