I have a friend that will need to renew her FM3 -it expires the end of june-she has been told she will need to go to an fm2-the one fm3 she has now has been renewed four times. She is not interested in getting an fm2 and has decided not to start over on another fm3. She cant figure out what to do. Her fm 3 expires June 26th and she has plane tickets to leave on the 28th. She was asking me if she should not do anything and surrender it to immigration when she departs on the 28th? Does anyone know about the best way to surrender your fm3? Thanks
This may not be the definitive answer, but I think she could go to INM, tell them it was not her intention to renew and that she'd like to surrender her FM3 prior to its expiry. When she explains her plan to depart, I believe they will replace it with an FMT, and she'll be on her way. If she wishes, later she can apply for another FM3, as I understand it, upon her return to Mexico.
Really? I have friends from canada that were just told they HAD to go to a fm 2. They explained that they would not qualify for an fm2 because they are only here for four months of the year. The need to go before the legal department at immigration for a ruling-they have an appointment March 15th. And they are not allowed to renew but will need to start the process all over again-proof of income, etc etc. This is in Playa not cancun. I assumed all rules for immigration were the same.
fm3 because as I stated before-they are only here four months at a time and would be spending more time out of the country than required for an fm2. Or am I missing something about the requirments to keep renewing an fm2?
FM2 permits you to be out of the country no more than 18 months in a five year period, as I understand it. It's not for snowbirds, generally speaking, but for people who'd like to settle down in Mexico. The FM2 has other "limitations" as well, it seems- you can't have a foreign plated auto registered in your name, and it costs significantly more to renew, each year. As for the possibility that some have been allowed to renew FM3s for many years, that was the norm, until last year: now, the Mexican Government is encouraging those who intend to stay and live in Mexico to convert to FM2s, in recognition of that fact.
fm3? Thanks V. My husband has an fm2 and cost about 1000 pesos more. However, he was told that with a fm2 rentista, he would be allowed to keep his foreign plated vehicle in his name. Still trying to find out what to do if someone wanted to surrender their fm3? The best way to do this. Thanks
Uh, yes. We have a working FM3, so that may be different. We can't go FM2 because we are away too much and we have a foreign-plated vehicle to go back and forth in. I have always read that you can not have a foreign plated vehicle with an FM2 If they are here only for four months, do they really need an FM3? Wouldn't a tourist permit be easier? Rob
again my husband was told that he could have a foreign plated vehicle on an fm2 rentista. No they do not need a fm3 but had one for five years, the fm3 has expired-they are not leaving until May and immigration is going to have a ruling as to what they will be allowed to do. Very confusing.
