So, this is going to sound like I'm a big chicken...but, I am wondering if the flight into Cancun is very turbulent? I used to have no prob. with flying until the year before last. I was coming back from LA and we hit turbulence so hard that it sent things flying into the air and the O2 masks down. Scared the sh*t out of me. I have not flown since but I am going to because I wanna go to Cancun soooo bad! This will be my first flight out of the US, so I'm a little nervous! Any advice?

I have flown down from Calgary, Alberta several times. All direct heading out over the Gulf of Mexico going over New Orleans. I have never experienced turbulence. There is always an opportunity but I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. In fact I have great naps on the flights now. Sit back relax and enjoy.

    A few cocktails

will usually help dealing with any turbulence.

The crew will do what they can to keep you out of turbulence. They talk to other pilots that have made the trip recently. Of course occasionally there will be some unforcast turblence or the crew can't get the clearance to climb or descend out of the bumpy stuff. The chances are greater near thunderstorms and while flying over the mountains especially this time of year. I would not worry. I would say what you described is very rare.

That usually happens when the pilots want a new plane and need the insurance money :p

You sound like me before I began my role as National Sales Manager, 10 years ago. I never booked morning flights, because I had to be drunk to get on the plane...lol.

Hundreds of flights later I feel perfectly at home on a plane. Major turbulance is very rare. It doesn't knock planes out the sky. The wings stay on and everything keeps working. It's just really bumpy and, for those that haven't encountered it, very unverving.

It's unlikely that you will hit major turbulance again, on this flight. But if you do think of it as driving on a bumpy road. That's all it is, really. Bumpy road, bumpy sky. Either way you arrive safely.

It's been said a million times but you really are statistically safer on the plane than during your drive to the airport.

Keep occupied during your flight. Watch a movie, snack, read a book, write some emails. The distractions will help. Buy some good noise cancelling headphones (I have Bose and they are great). They make movies and music sound great and you don't hear all the normal sounds planes make that are sometimes be a concern for nervous flyers.

Cancun has a throughly modern airport that handles thousands of flights each week.

You will be safe. And you will have a wonderful vacation.

Thanks, that helps. I will only be in the air roughly 4 hours (2 on each plane) so hopefully it will go by quickly.
