Hi, This is the first time i have been to cancun and was just wondering what was the tipping etiquette in the hotels as i will be using pesos Also i will be taking travellers cheques with me and was wondering if these were easy to change. I will be staying in the riu cancun Thanks
Seen as nobody answered my first queries maybe they will answer this one. How is the weather over there just now??
Its been a long time, but the first trip to Cancun I brought Travelers Checks and IMO they were a hassle. Had to go to the bank to cash them and lines at the bank can be aggravating. We tipped our hotel maid 5 USD a day last year. She must have liked it because our room was always made up top notch. Not sure how the travelers checks are now, but maybe your hotel could-would cash them. Try looking at the Riu's site and see if they do that.
Yay for pesos! I have had a couple of friends who work in the service industry here say they are having a hard time exchanging their USD. 50 pesos a day for the maid, 20% on meals, 10 pesos per bag for the bellman. Drinks, well, it depends how much you are chugging and how many runs the waiter has to make. I generally give a 50 peso tip at the beginning of the time I will be in a section, then tip after depending how many beverages. Just my humble opinion of course.
Thanks for the replys. Its my first time here and i was just wanting half a clue on the tipping as i dont want to be greedy. How is the weather out there just now?
Bubulu you can do a search on travelers checks look for search at the top. I did and came up with this: http://www.cancuncare.com/forum/cancun-info/13330-first-time-couple-questions.html I always have brought just cash and have never used a credit card to get cash, but lots of others do and recommend it. I have always been comfortable carrying cash in Cancun and have vacationed there 10 years now. I take half and the wife takes half. Never had any troubles, I dont flash it around though. You don't want to be in a line at the bank for an hour or more......and it can happen, been there done that. Im not in Cancun and havent seen a forecast but we always go at the end of Feb. and the weather has always been great from low 80's to low 90's for highs. You may get a passing shower a day or two in 10-14 days. But I have never been rained out. The heavier rains I have seen always seem to have been late night/early morning. So plan on Sun and fun! This will be the first year we arent going in 8 years and couldnt be sadder. But my wife needs a new knee, not much of a vacation for either of us....
It has been my experience that they love 2 dollar bills. Last time friends of ours brought a bunch of them and the staff was extremely receptive.
How long ago did you use the 2 dollar bills? I was thinking about taking some but I here the locals are having trouble with US funds.
We were there in August 2010. But if people that live there are now saying stick with pesos I guess this time we will be doing differently.
