At that age when Im Looking for a winter vacation/work location wondering if anyone has connection with the medical field or hospital. Would like to be able to do some part time work as a paramedic. Thanks, And Happy New Year
I don't know of any foreigner that works as a paramedic in Cancun--not that there aren't any of course. I think the Red Cross hires them. 1.- you would need a work permit for that.(see current thread on navigating Immigration.) 2.- You need to speak Spanish. 3.- Work would pay about $500 usd a month. 4.- I doubt if anyone would want to hire a foreigner or anyone else really for a few months.
My bilingual doctor employs a paramedic/nurse who is trying to learn English, but mostly speaks only Spanish. I have a Mexican Red Cross Certificate a step or two below EMT. You need perfect Spanish language skills to work here. With the certificate I have, my Spanish is good enough to tell the cops I am qualified to combat shock and stop bleeding and administer CPR. We always wait for the Red Cross. I'm suggesting you will not be welcomed with open arms. There are many Mexicans who have gotten qualified because there is some job market for them. No one is going to hire you over a Mexican is basically what I am saying.
I've always heard that Mexico has a surplus of "doctors" (those who have received a degree in medicine from a Mexican public college anyway, like the "doctors" who will see you for 30 pesos at the pharmacy, more like a nurse by US standards I'd imagine but still considered a MD in Mexico....), and while I don't know how true that really is, I do know that anyone wanting to do any sort of health related profession has to go through all kinds of hurdles to get their permission to practice in Mexico if their degree and/or certification is from another country... and I'd imagine an EMT is no exception... so basically I can't see it working out as a seasonal job unless; A. You're Mexican & B. You've got the required Mexico issued documents qualifying you to work as an EMT. or C. You're completely "under the table" about it, which would be odd in that line of work to say the least... (ie: black market medical services )... even then I don't think places would want to hire someone they know is only looking to work for a few months....

I would totally take it as far as you can, just don't count on it and DEFNITELY don't count on the money. Let us know how it goes!
