I hope I'm not posting in the wrong place - feel free to move/delete if I am.

But I was wondering - does anyone here buy travel insurance, and if so, what kind and where from? We're making Labor Day week our Temptation Tradition, and since it's right in the middle of hurricane season, and since we've gotten relatively lucky both times we've gone, we figure sooner or later, a hurricane will make things difficult for us.

    So I wonder...

I know there's different types of insurance - some where you can cancel/postpone for any reason YOU choose and some where you're reimbursed if the airlines/hotel cancel because of something out of your control - but if YOU cancel, you're up a creek. And even then, you only get "up to" x% of the total cost, whatever that means.

So how about it? Have you bought insurance, and why (not)? And if you did, what kind and from where?

It's always a good idea to get travel insurance, especially during hurricane season. I know that in the UK the travel operators wont let you board the plane unless you have some kind of travel insurance. We used to get an annual policy which costs something like $60 for the whole year.

As for providers in the US, a Google search will bring up plenty of options but here is a company I have worked with in the past who I know offer decent policies like the one you're looking for. It's free to ask for a quote.

we talked to them for our last vacation, but the only policies they offered were the ones where we'd get reimbursed up to x%, but ONLY if the airlines/hotel cancelled; not if we cancelled (for illness, a hurricane in the area, etc).

I'd expect you'd pay quite a lot for a policy where you make the calls on cancelling. I'm sure they exist but the risk of payout is high and I suspect the premium would match that.
