I'm just about DONE with my recurrent calf injury. Does anyone know a good PT (and I mean REALLY good) preferably down here (near Playa)? I have simply GOT to get this under control.

Ah, sports injuries, the bane of those who want to stay fit and enjoy a long, healthy life! See the thread- http://www.cancuncare.com/forum/living-cancun-riviera-maya/13799-fitness-health-older-athletes.html

Kathy, among other things, a "cure" may require changing your preferred exercise from running to something that does not stress the injured area- swimming for example- for a number of months, then graduating to some exercise that puts slightly more strain on the injured area- cycling for example- until this thing is well behind you.

I've had to do exactly this to get beyond tendonosis that was induced by excessive stair climbing for exercise (100-120 stories). It's taken over a year, but I'm nearly there now. Going back to the very thing that has induced the injury may not be practical for some extended period of time.

If you haven't had a workup by a sports medicine specialist doctor that could be arranged in Cancun and then you would have a definitive opinion about the reasons this continues to plague you. T.J. is personally acquainted with the sports medicine doctor for Los Tigres and could probably help you get an appt with him if you wanted.

I haven't inquired, but there may be a PT who works in the Playa Hospiten Hospital: I know there is one here, in Cancun, at Hospiten, as my wife has been to them with back issues. She was favorably impressed by the service, but I understand Cancun is a bit too far for you to go more than occasionally.

    Any comments, MAVSFAN?

OMG V, if I can't run, I seriously think I'd rather shoot myself. Non-running mommy is a VERY SCARY mommy. I need my sanity back. It has been 2 weeks already and the only thing keeping me going (I'm water running and swimming) is the thought of getting back on the road in 2 weeks.

I'm just going to pretend you didn't say that bit of blasphemy up there and agree with you, YES, getting back on the road in 2 weeks will be GREAT and hopefully I'll have 12 weeks injury-free before climbing back on the merry-go-round again. :)

But srsly, if there is a PT who knows muscles and running injuries I really do need help. I'm going into year 2 of this recurrent injury and can't begin to make a race schedule because I never know if I'll be injured or not. I'm still holding out hope for the 21K in Campeche on 5-Sept.

Kathy, two weeks is nothing in terms of healing any serious soft-tissue injury, especially a recurring one, so accepting that a complete cure is going to be a slow process is the starting point of finally getting over this (while understanding that some injuries never fully resolve themselves, or leave "residuals" you will always be aware of).

I agree that there is something peculiarly satisfying about running but, following a serious injury to my knee, I learned that, over time, I could begin to enjoy other things, things I had not previously cared for: now, for example, I thoroughly enjoy cycling, which also embodies the very pleasant sensation of moving, at speed, under your own power, just as in running.

My point is, 1) this will take time and accepting that is important- and, 2) for you not to despair of happiness because of this.

Adapting to changes that occur in our lives and bodies is an important part of deriving the maximum joy of living, whatever our ages and states.
