I tend to use the following sites to keep up to date with news in Cancun. Quintana Roo - Grupo SIPSE, sipse.com Por Esto! | Periodismo veraz para un estado joven Are there any others you'd recommend?
I usually go to Noticaribe: Portada first, then Sipse and Por Esto, Noticaribe is a good site as they take most of the local news sources and put the stories in one place and it's always up to date. I also really like a local blogger who covers news, Cancun Foros.com | Blog, Radio, Clasificados, Noticias e informacion Here are some others I use.... Diario de Quintana Roo - Inicio Ultimas Noticias de Cancún, Quintana Roo,Playa del Carmen,Tulum,Chetumal Noticias Cancun: Columna de Comentario Enfoque Radio – Las noticias de Quintana Roo con David Romero Diario de Quintana Roo - Inicio
I have a bit of an addiction to the news, though sometimes give myself "rehab" time to get away from all the depressing images and stories. Usually I'll just go to Noticaribe then move on, but if I find a big story and want other views or if I hear "gossip" about something and can't find it there, I'll check the other sources. I think it would be great if someone had the chutzpah to create a local news site in English, I've discussed it with the man behind Noticaribe, I would love to do it, but they would need to extend the length of the day by about 12 hours for me to do all the translations.
Funny you should mention it, that was exactly on my mind - a news site in English for expats and vacationers alike with stories sourced from local media, translated and rewritten. After further consideration I'm not sure I have the time / commitment for it though, or that there is enough news to give it a wider than Cancun appeal.
It's a huge time commitment with a pretty limited audience. More of a service than a business I would say.
I have a "Translate Page" button on my Google toolbar which I use to translate the news pages (among others). Many times some of the translations don't make complete sense, but you can definitely get the jist of the article. They at least make a lot more sense than me attempting to translate myself and it takes A LOT less time! You should be able to download the google toolbar with the "Translate Page" feature if you don't already have it.
I noticed that I rarely need the translators anymore, I just read the Spanish text. Google translate has improved immensely over the last few years though! I think it would be cool to have a news site in English, but mostly because I am a news junkie and interested in writing the site. Not enough time though! Ana Maria Salazar is a really great radio host, she does Mexico news in English and has a blog. It's not Cancun focused, more general Mexican stuff. Her radio show is really interesting if you can catch it! Here's her blog... Mexico Today
Probably the best source of news is our great friend Bundy. Just call him for a daily update. His number is 998 - xxx - xxxx. LOL
