Hopefully someone has a suggestion - we fly into Cancun pretty late in the day and want to stay somewhere close to the airport overnight before transferring to our resort. (ie - we don't want to check into the resort at 8:00 pm and lose one of our days at the resort) We are looking for a clean/decent/reasonably priced hotel close to the airport. Any tips?
Nothing is really near the airport, and the dive hotels tend to be downtown(way past your resort from the airport). Just pay for your night, get settled in and hit the town at 10-11pm or so-that's when things are just getting started.
thanks for the advice. We are staying at the Excellence Playa Mujures for 8 days so we don't want to blow a night by checking in late.
The Marriott Courtyard is near the airport, though there are some places downtown that you could stay too. Hotel Alux is simple, clean and cheap, or you could step up to the Radisson or the new Ramada.
Stay in a condo at Solymar for the night. The price is inexpensive and you get a decent room. However do not book it through the hotel rather through one of the condo owners since those rooms are better maintained then the hotel part of the resort.
I would suggest, as does Cancun Canuck, the Marriott Courtyard. It is not in the HZ but it is less than 4 miles from the airport and they have a free shuttle. Another option, similar to the recommendation of gabesz, would be a one night stand at the Salvia, a condo hotel, about as close as you can get to the Party Center, but reasonable and nice. This would be exactly midway between kms 9 and 10. km 0 is the beginning of downtown. Back to downtown, I concur that the Radisson is quite nice and the Ramada, is newly remodeled, but not new unless I missed the demolition of the Hotel Margarita, has a great location downtown and an easy ride out to Playa Mujeres. I have put family up in both the Radisson and the pre-remodeled, Ramada. If you are thinking budget, Alux is your best bet in terms of the hotel and it terms of getting there. Assuming you will arrive from the US on a non charter flight and not on Jet Blue, you will arrive at Terminal 3. Just outside the terminal, to the left, you can catch a free shuttle to Terminal 2 and they run every few minutes. From there, walk to the left end of Terminal 2 and catch the ADO bus to downtown for $45 pesos or $5 US. These buses leave on the hour and half hour and you buy the ticket at the bus. Once downtown, exit the bus station, walk left to the street, make a right and the Alux is across the street, Laurel, at the end of the first block. I think you got good advice all around.
You will be arriving at the Terminal Nacional, aka Terminal 2. As you exit the building, you can walk to the right and see the bus lot near the end of the bldg. ADO buses are red and silver. I realize this is only applicable if you are heading downtown. If you are considering the Radisson, you will get a better deal on the Radisson website than by walking in and trying to negotiate. Once they quoted me the rate and when I balked, the desk clerk pointed me to the business center and I went up there, made a res and walked back with my conf #. Buen viaje, T.J.
