Also the big city of Edmonton Alberta... murder, muggings, etc. don't vacation here... warning !!!! ..Who would, we ain't got no sunshine anyways.. LOL Can anyone tell me where anyone is completely safe in this wonderful world?
The killings (from what I read) were in the Cancun Hotel Zone (or at least the bodies were found there). From what the news said, there are very strong implications that they were drug related. I did not read one article that says anything about the victims being tourists. So, unless you are planning a big drug or weapon deal.......have several cocktails and enjoy Mexico! See you in a few weeks!
I will add my two cents and will agree in most with JodyandRich, I have been a Homicide Detective for 6 years here in Texas and by the nature of the beast, have access to "law enforcement only" bulletins from the U.S. and abroad and have read and seen some pretty grotesque and brutal things. However, we are fortunate that these incidents only affect a small percentage of the population in both the U.S. and Mexico. My wife and I have been to Cancun a half a dozen times and will be there in a couple of weeks with our kids for their second trip. I will admit that recent events there in Cancun have me a bit more cautious, but no more than I would usually be while in Cancun and the hotel zone. I have co-workers who question my pending trip to Cancun and I have to inform them how safe the airport, the roadway to the hotel zone, and the hotel zone itself is with the constant presence of police and military. I will admit that I try not to give myself a false sense of total security because of the police presence and just use common sense and good judgement. By doing this we always have a good time while in Cancun. The information that is provided by the State Department is for the most part reliable, but keep in mind that they are thinking for the public as a whole and try to provide reliable information for specific destinations as best a possible. I do value Steve's opinion and the information that he provides as he is a resident in Cancun and in my opinion fair and impartial with what he states on this forum. In summary, realize that tourism in Cancun is a major form of revenue for the city and state and they realize that any threat to that can be paramount. The recent violence that several have referenced on this forum is real and does occur, the most violent of such tends to be drug related. The only death that I am aware of in Cancun involving a tourist was an Asian male who was stabbed during an unknown altercation in an alley. The article was posted on this forum a few years ago because someone had concerns then. Keep in mind though that authorities attributed the incident to a possible drug deal that went bad. Other than that, as previously mentioned, the crime in the U.S. is not any different than it is in Cancun, cities have their good parts and their bad. Talk to you guys then.
The recent incident of the discovery of bodies was in the small town of El Roble, in the area of Leona Vicario which is way out in the boonies approx 30 miles from Cancun Hotel Zone. All indications so far are that they are indeed drug related crimes. Latest local news, use Google translate: Identifican a dos de los ejecutados en Cancun - Grupo SIPSE, sipse.com
See Steve, your point was just proven....you that you CAN'T believe everything you read....the news articles I read were saying they were found in the hotel zone! Thank you for the clarification .
Yes that is true the one I read said it was near a Cancun Resort.....I am over it already.....I know I am going there to have a good time and I will be cautious of my surroundings and I am not there for drugs of any sort so I am in the clear on that. I am really looking forward to going and counting down the days!
The thing is nobody has every heard of Leona Victoria so International news just reports it as being near a place everyone has heard of - Cancun. Of course 30 miles is still too close, but please dont think you'll be tripping over bodies in the TTR parking lot. It's also worth bearing in mind for those that seldom venture far from the resort, that Cancun is now a large city with well over 1 million inhabitants. It's not just a collection of hotels and discos
Yes down here in MIAMI, LOL, kidddddding people! I know Miami has terrible crime in certain parts (like any other larger city)...I live 20 miles from there but it doesn't stop me from venturing over, heck i work in North Miami....Just the other night I went to a huge popular club in downtown Miami (Club Space for you who've heard of it), in one of the worst areas you wouldnt want to be walking around at night alone in....we were in a small group though and didn't venture off in empty allies, just went where we needed to go and had a blast!
