Don`t let one fear mongering article upset you Cancun is very safe with heavy police presence. Cartels want people to feel safe and buy their drugs, how will they make money if people are scared? trust me no one including the cartels want that.

Why would you want to fly all the way to Mexico and then not leave the resort? Might as well go to Vegas or Florida if all you want is sun, and drinks served by people with Spanish accents.

As for is it safe, of course it is. I wouldnt be living there if it wasn't.

The border is 40 hours by car to Cancun. I live in NH but LA is only 35 hours away. Should I worry about gang violence?:aktion054::aetsch022:

I was there in april, we walked around town at the wee hours a few times... Cancun has always been a safe place and safe feeling. Trouble will only find you if you are looking for trouble... as with any city or country for that matter, there are bad spots and bad people, but as far as the tourist area of cancun... I would have no worries at all.

Hotel Zone is usually always safe. Police are always patrolling it. The hardcore criminals you see on TV keep there activity away from the Hotel Zone as they know the govt. doesn't put up with it there at all.

I'd have no fear going out and about both during the day and at night in the Hotel Zone. Now downtown Cancun at night is a little different story.

I'd have to disagree on that one :)

Downtown is pretty much all I go these days for a night out. Like any city it depends which part of downtown you go to, but the part tourists go to is more safe than the HZ imho. You'd have to be extremely knowledgable about the area or extremely unlucky to find an unsafe part of downtown. That said, I would suggest that people avoid the strip clubs at Plaza 21 at the present time.

I honestly feel there is more risk in the HZ party zone - every deadbeat criminal looking to steal purses/cameras or mug someone goes to the HZ at the weekend to seek out drunk tourists. There aren't many of them and such crime is rare but those that do it, that's where they go.

As for drug crime and related murders - well that is within their own ranks. Dont get mixed up in it and you're safe as houses.

I've lived in Cancun for almost 6 years now and have yet to hear of a tourist of any nationality being murdered in Cancun. I'm sure that record goes back way before my time here.

My wife and I were there in May. We didn't feel unsafe in town at all and in fact we found most of the locals were very friendly and accommodating when it came to asking directions or recommendations. Granted we did spend the majority of time at the resort but that was only because we were having such a good time there with new friends that we didn't venture away. We did go down for some clubbing and dinner as well as shopping of course. Just use common sense and stay in the main areas and you will be fine.
