I have recently booked a ticket with alaskaair from CUN to the States... later i find out that i must pay extra for checked baggage!!!!! 15 bucks for the first piece & 25 for the second. I have traveled with alaska in the past but before all the airlines started going broke & charging for everything!!! Didn't see this one coming... Travel sites should start including a warning label that says Baggage not included or must pay extra if traveling with baggage!!:aktion047:

Has anyone traveled recently with Alaska & found themselves with this problem? anyone know how to avoid it (canceling & traveling with another airline is not an option since cancellation fees will cost more than paying for the luggage fees)?

Sorry to hear that, I think most airlines are adding on extra charges. Ryanair recently said they would be charging to use the bathrooms!

I thought you were going to write about cancelled flights, Alaska Air recently announced they were not going to be flying to Cancun anymore....

    Mergers

It could get worse: United and Continental just announced a merger in the works which, if approved by the regulators, will ultimately lead to higher fares on their routes, as they cut back the number of seats available to flyers.

Continental now has service to practically all Mexican cities of any importance, including Cancun, so any changes to their schedules and fares will be unwelcome, in all likelihood. (I recently flew Continental RT to Colorado Springs, for example, and theirs was the cheapest fare, and best schedule, for my travel dates.)

I can see the day coming where there will be an additional charge at check in for being overweight... just step on this scale....

Of course, no credit for being underweight....

Hope no airline people are reading this...lol

I'm sorry Epic, but that is one of the first things we check when flying - which carrier charges what for bags. It used to be (until early April of this year) that Mexicana gave 2 free bags. Now it looks like they're charging for the 2nd one.

Frontier charges nothing for 2 bags.

use Kayak to book and they'll have links to all the airline fees.

@CancunCanuck - Ryanairs idea got shot down due to some flight regulation; they later stated that all profits from the pay to potty would have gone to charity anyway…

I hadn’t heard about them ditching the destination. I will be back from my trip a couple of days before they stop flights completely. I once flew Alaska before and I swear we were only 18 passengers on the whole plane. Best Flight Ever!!!

@Brewster - The charge by the pound scheme started in Philly. Check out the link
It's arrived. New airline to charge by pound | Gadling.com

@Kathy Caribe – I haven’t booked an international flight in a while, all these extra charges are crazy, I searched with kayak, cheapoair, Travelocity, expedia, despegar different travel dates & then proceeded to with the dates that were the cheapest on the airlines own website. Didn’t really focus on extra fees at all.

Thanks for showing me : Airline Fees - KAYAK a little to late but I still appreciate it, maybe Steve will make his own version for the site since its very useful.

I started a thread a few weeks ago that Spirit, starting August 1, will be charging "op to $45" FOR CARRY ON. They it would actually reduce costs if you did not put anything in the overhead compartment as they were lowering the basic prices.

I checked before and after August 1 prices but could not find a single instance of a price drop.

For the Canadian's out there Westjet still allows two checked bags and two carry ons.

The weight limits are higher than other airlines, as well...

I'm sorry if my post sounded like salt in the wound - the fees are just insane. I fly Mexicana if financially reasonable (even if more expensive) because they treat you so nicely and haven't yet really stuck it to you with fees. Sorry you got such a lousy wake up call.
