Just before I left Cancun early last month, for another spring, summer and fall in Canada, I applied to renew my FM3, in person, on Av. Nadar. This was my first renewal application, so I don't know the time-frame of having it processed. Added to that are the new FM3 policies and procedures that you've all been discussing here. (I'm thinking that normally it would have been processed since I left 4 weeks ago.)

How can I check the status of my renewal application? DOES IT REQUIRE HIRING A LAWYER? OR - can a friend of mine in Cancun ask IMN about it for me? Can I contact IMN via an email? A phone call? If so, what are their contact details?

    Question for you

Hi, Davi, since you're in the middle of this process, I wonder if you'd mind answering a question for me?

Are you still in Mexico (it doesn't sound like it!), or did you get a letter from INM allowing you to exit and return while the application for renewal was still in process? If you got a letter, did it specify a period of time in which you could be out of the country?

"Spring, summer and fall" out of the country, while your application is pending...? No wonder you're looking for a way to check on it. It's clear from the INM paperwork that you can appoint someone, in writing, to act on your behalf.

Call Mauricio Mendoza, at 9981472225, to put your mind at rest. But first, answer my question, please, above!

Good luck with this, too bad you couldn't have postponed going home till this was settled, eh?

    Thanks, V.

I have never renewed from outside the country and from what I understand, your renewal is put on "hold" until you're back in Mexico. If I've misundertood and you're actually in Cancun, go down to IMN. That is what works best for me. You go down, they tell you to come back, you go down again, they tell you you're missing something, you point out the thing they need in your papers, they say they'll review it and to come back, you back down, they tell you something else, and then one day it is READY!!! :)

Well, actually my last prorroga took only 3 or 4 visits - it was quite easy.

FM2/3 renewals have been taking 1 to 3 weeks lately, from what I've seen. If you dropped papers off in person they would have told you when to return. Did you make the payment for your renewal?

Did you get the letter that V mentioned (the letter is called Permiso para Salida y Regreso, or something close to that, they keep changing the name of the letter)? Did you tell INM you would be out of the country?

I applied for my FM3 renewal at the last minute prior to leaving for Canada. Truthfully I wasn't gonna renew, but I did cuz I was told that I had to to get a Permisso de Salida. (Good for a return within 30 days.) I just needed exit papers - cuz my FM3 had expired a week before my flight to Canada. RG, I didn't pay for my FM3 renewal; that's done if I'm approved apparently, so IMN told me. So if I give someone the money, can they pick it up for me, V?

I'm not sure exactly how the centro office will handle your case. I think you need to send someone down to the office to check the status. But if you filed the papers without listing an attorney or a representative in your application then I'm not sure that anyone will be allowed to check your status.

You ought to have been able to simply turned in your FM3 with INM at the airport as you left the country. Even with it expired you could have surrendered it at the airport and would have been allowed to leave.

So now you have the Permiso letter and it's valid for 30 days? Usually (lately) those Permiso letters are good for 90 days, are you sure it's 30 days?

And you are returning AFTER the letter will no longer be valid? I think that means you've will have lost your FM3 status by the time you return. Unless you get ahead of this I think you will have to return as a tourist and start over if you want an FM3.

I would email Mauricio, he might be able to pull some string and be able to move things forward for you. He may need you to notarize a letter giving him power of attorney status over your case, or something like that.

You might also make headway if you go to the Mexican Consulate, maybe.
