I asked if you had sky because it would be unlikely & overkill to hire cablemas. Knowing you got sky I would recomend Axtel even more, I have a friend who bought a house at Real Santa Fe & they didnt have phone lines since Telmex was taking its sweet time to get things done so they hired Axtel that installed an Antenna to enable a phone line & internet at his place. I also saw an advert that you can customize your plan & it said prices as low as 250 pesos (20 bucks) for both services... someone posted a link you should check it out.
I wanted to get one but unless you are a student & teacher than can provide proof its really expensive!!! for a student it would cost between 300 & 400, god forbid you go over your limit since they charge an arm & a leg. Since its for a rental i would recomend a Big wireless modem that will stay in one place & doesn't require additional software to use & less chances of being lost or drenched in booze.
One word of caution on antenna based Internet. If it's an 802.11 radio connection it's probably an antenna pointed almost horizontally over the lagoon to a tower someplace in Centro. Depending on the signal quality and your location in the ZH, service will be "satisfactory" at best. If it's an antenna pointing up in the sky to a geosynchronous satellite it will be fine for surfing, unusable for Skype or any other VoIP application and impossible to use for secure (SSL) connections like banking and bill paying. Also, expect caps on how much you can download in a day. The satellite providers, like Hughsnet, will throttle your connection back to slower than dialup if you exceed your daily ration of megabytes. At the lowest price tier you can't even download most operating system service packs. I could go into a long, boring explanation, but just believe me. When I moved down here 5 years ago I spent thousands of dollars on various radio and satellite solutions, none of which were ideal and some of which involved a trip to Profeco to get my money back.
We have been using Hughes.net since 2005. I do all my work online, banking, VPNs, etc. I have to download and upload files daily (SFTP) and am platform connected (VPN) at another job. All via Hughes. Obviously we do all our banking via Hughes also. I am able to use all SSL services (banking, paypal, ebay, etc.) without a problem. Skype, however, can be almost unusable, especially wireless. We are very limited on downloads though - but I am able to work (with a lot of down/uploading) daily - the kids can't watch YouTube or TV videos though. And no music downloading until the non-FAP hours of 1am to 6am. So you can do huge downloads but not until 1am. We have been very happy with Hughes, but believe me, if we had the option of DSL, we'd take it in a heartbeat. To the OP, check at your local TelCel office for their 3G stuff. Also, intheroo.com had a long and detailed thread about this recently. I'll see if I can find the thread... this is all i can find so far, but i know there is another, better one... http://intheroo.com/playa-del-carmen-forums/locals-talk/2220-telcel-amigo-plan-rates-english.html found it. this is the one i was thinking of... http://intheroo.com/playa-del-carme...rnet-service-playa-del-carmen-del-carmen.html well, i'm not sure that 2nd link was all that helpful. it would be on the first page though. i've seen adverts in the TelCel offices of a little USB dongle that gives internet. I'd just go down to TelCel, if I were you, and see what is available.
Telmex offers the internet plans. where is your unit? I ask because I manage a bunch of units in Portofino and Bay View Grand and currently telmex has no capacity to add more lines. we have several clients waiting for 3 months now and telmex keeps telling us 2 weeks? well we all know what this means in Mexico anyway I own a unit and the telmex plan for 1 mb service which includes 200 local calls monthly and unlimited to rest of Mexico costs 599 pesos You do not need FM3 as I have no FM3 and I have it in my name for my unit as do most of my rental clients they also offer a 512Kbps package for 389 pesos and a 2MB for 999
Thanks for the update, Kathy_Caribe. Back in 2005 SSL transactions were impossible. Perhaps the new bird they put up to supplement their service has something to do with the ability to now handle SSL, although how they get around the time delay caused by the round trip of 44,000 miles is beyond me. Ditto for the 1 AM download slot. That didn't exist back in 2005 either. The cap was in effect 24/7. But, Internet by satellite is still a last resort option. I can appreciate your reason for using it. I was in the same situation in 2005, until DSL finally arrived in the south of the Hotel Zone.
I am in BVG as well. Can my property manager go down and get this set up w/o me and how long does it take? my client is coming May 28th. Thanks in advance for your help.
