I don't have another alternative. What was your bill last year? Did you make any voice calls? That's what kills you. DO NOT call anyone or answer any call when you are out of the country. Don't use any txt either because they are kind of expensive too. Data plan is much cheaper so use that solely. 20MB for $25 AT&T should be all you need if you minimize any big data usage (so don't download or send pictures or any big files, don't be checking your facebook every hour).

Last year my bill was $27 more than usual. $10 was my international data plan upgrade (sprint has unlimited international plan for $1 more a day which is awesome) which I used for the whole time I was there. $17 was from 10 minutes of phone call I absolute had to take. If I hadn't taken those calls, my bill would only be $10 more than normal.

Not me, I don't see the point unless you are making only local calls. If you have a Mexican phone and you are calling US numbers (which most of your friends have), you are still paying long distance. AND I'm not going to answer any of your calls.

then we should all contact by email then.

and if I only get data plan this time, doesnt that include ping? I only need a wifi signal for that. i just sent something just now to Sam and had the phone in airplane mode and the wifi on.

couldn't it come in handy if you could tell people you meet to call you from their hotel room, since you have a mexican number?

That's kind of a limited use. I think phone comes most in handy when you are both out and need to meet up and find each other. The diminished utility doesn't really justify the little money you save from renting a local phone.

Yes, email/fb message will be the way to go between you/Fletch (iphone users) and me/Andrew/Joe(blackberry users). Is there wifi at Oasis? If so, then you can use fb/ping/internet freely on your iphone too without having to worry about it eating up your 25MB limit (just remember to go to airplane mode whenever you get wifi signal).

Me, Andrew, and Joe will be using blackberry IM to stay in touch with each other. Sam unfortunately won't be able to get a cheap data plan from his British provider. So you won't be able to ping him (unless he is on wifi). He is going to setup his fb to forward his fb messages to his SMS and he can SMS other people (except me because Sprint SMS doesn't work oversea). SMS is alittle more expensive but that's the cheapest option he has.
