I've just booked a trip to Cancun tonite and wanted to know if I chose the right time to go. I'm arriving on June 23 and leaving July 1. This is my first time in Cancun (only been to Cabo before) and I heard good (beautiful beaches) and scary things about it (locals killing tourists).

On top of that, I hope I can make friends while I'm there because I'm stuck in the Hotel Zone.

Btw: I'm in my mid to late 20s and going with family to celebrate my mother's 60th birthday.

I dunno what you mean about locals killing tourists. Be careful about any news like that you read. Cancun's Hotel Zone is probably one of the safest places in the world. Yes, Cancun has some crime, but so does any other big city. You probably won't see any of it in the Hotel Zone.

I can guarantee you that any tourist in Cancun who is a victim of violence (I've never heard of any, personally) was involved in some kind of sketchy business.

You'll always make tons of friends, at least at the hotel you're staying at!

You picked a great time to go. There will be lots of people around in the summer to hang out with. However, it will be HOT! Bring your sunscreen. (If you think you don't need it, you're wrong.)

    Have fun and relax.

I've lived here for 5 and a half years and not once have I heard of a 'tourist being killed by a local'.

I live in Cancun by choice not necessity and if I ever felt Cancun was dangerous I simply wouldnt be here.

My 10th trip to Cancun starts in a few days and I have never heard of or seen any violence in the HZ or Downtown. I also wouldnt travel here if I thought it wasnt safe.

Grab a bus to some of the fun downtown. Bus is only 0.70 cents a trip.

    Thanks everyone!

It's just I sometimes hear it on the Spanish news that American tourists gets killed in popular "tourist" hot spots by Mexican locals for whatever reason, which made me hesistate at first. But since it's been more than 20 years since my mom been to Mexico (she's been to Acapulco) and needed a vacation, we decided to give that a shot.

As for weather, despite being blessed on getting a natural tan (I'm a Latina), I will make sure I have the sunscreen handy. I got burned on the last 2 days of my Cabo vacation because I forgot to put sunscreen on after swimming with the dolphins. LOL

Another question... does anyone have stories about the Royal Solaris? That's where I'm staying at.

I am trying to figure out what "stuck in the hotel zone means"?
The Hotel Zone is Cancun, unless you want to stay in the city itself. I just don't think I have ever heard anyone headed to Cancun saying they are "stuck" in the Hotel Zone?

As far as going to Cancun in June, I personally would never go in the summer months, the way I see it, who needs a tropical vacation in June? I would much rather be in Cancun in January and February when you really need a break from the winter weather.

When I vacationed here, the Royal Solaris is the ONLY hotel I ever stayed at. And now that I live here, it is the one that I recommend to friends and family, (unless they are cheap like my Dad). They are NEVER disappointed. I have friends on staff there, and they really show guests a good time. They are actully one of the best, in Cancun. And that is based on how well they are paid. Anyway, I know people that go there solo, and just make friends with others that are there. I went there to visite a friend last month, (and he is going back this Friday), and he had a since size crew of others that were staying there to hang around with.
Don't worry about the weather, it will be hot, but you will be by water all day long. And PLEASE, quit listening to that garbage news you listen too. It's BS. My Dad wouldn't have allowed me to stay here if there was any chance of me being hurt in any way. Keep your nose clean and allll will be good.

Btw...based off your name, are you from Pennsylvania? I am from Upper Darby!!!

Cool I'm from the Lehigh Valley but flying out of JFK Airport instead of Philly Int. because I'm attending a wedding in NY a few days before.

The biggest fear I ever had as a tourist in Cancun was one time I thought a huge, drunk Spring Breaker was either going to fall on me, or puke on me, on the bus. I escaped with my life and my dignity.

Now I live in Cancun and am totally fearless.

It will be hot but who cares? Bring your own sunscreen. Too costly in the HZ.
