So I have 2 questions (just trying to consolidate threads here, esp since they go hand in hand):

    1) Purses: Do any of you bring at least one good purses to cancun? Every year i've brought a beach bag(walmart), a Coach purse, a nice black dressy Guess purse for nice dinners, and a tote for night time outings. Last year I bought one of those totes at the flea market that say:
    Cancun, Mexico
    Cancun, Mexico
    Cancun, Mexico
    Cancun, Mexico
lol going down both sides. It was like 5 bucks and I still use it here at home... but it's dirty and ill probably buy another one this year. It was great for the beach and for the nights out down town. I am a photographer so I need a bag that can carry my purse-wallet, camera(huge and heavy), 2 digital cameras(tiny), and a video camera.

I want to bring at least one good purse so I have a nice accessory when we have "dress up" nights.

Also, since it is my birthday while I'm down there... I was thinking about buying myself a Louie... but I'm not sure if I want to risk someone stealing my purse if I leave it at the hotel during the week when it's not dress up night. This goes hand in hand with the next one, because if there was a day where i wasnt going somewhere special, i could just lock it up in my bag somewhere. I tend to hide things inside the zippered lining in my suitcase(in case maids get nosy or try to steal... but since my purses are usually the size of weekend bags, i doubt thats possible. Any thoughts? What are your tricks and ideas?

    2) Suitcases: So I hear that in some hotels, people that work for the hotel and sometimes even patrons steal stuff from you...... and even the maids hide the remotes or the safe key so that you will have to pay fees when you leave and they make more money of you. I just bought a 2 pack of Hot Pink TSA locks, but I was wondering what other people do to hide their stuff? I know people must hide things under the mattress, under the bed, in between towels/clothes in your suitcase or even under a towel on the balcony. Tell me your secrets! :D

I know everyone usually says to leave your valuables at home... but I'm only bringing the necessities. I mean I haven't had anything stolen the last 4 or 5 times, but the worst the economy gets, the more desperate people get.

Let me know what you guys do and any other hotel tips and secrets :D

Man, you pack heavy girl! I am not even bringing a suitcase! Making due with a carryon and rather large "purse". Who needs all the high end stuff on vaca, you will prob just lose it or have it get stolen. I say just bring the bare essentials and let it ride...

You'll be fine with locks on your suitcase. The main problems at hotels are when people leave things out in the open. Usually if something is missing out of your luggage, it's because you've misplaced it. (Trust me, I've worked as a concierge and receptionist. Usually people find "stolen" items the next day, stuck between their shirts or something.) So don't leave valuables out in the open, and the lock is a good security measure, just in case.

As for your purse, NEVER EVER bring anything valuable when you go to a nightclub, especially in terms of purse/wallet. They have a tendency to "disappear" from off the table. (I know this applies in Cancun, and I assume most anywhere else.) For a night out at a nice restaurant, you're fine. In Cancun's Hotel Zone, nobody will mug you.

    Happy bday!

Large purses will be just fine inside a safe. Usually you program the code yourself, so no one else will be able to open it.

If something should happen, the hotel can find out who went into your room and at what time, since the key cards used are automatically registered into the system.

Honestly, you shouldn't have a problem. 95% of the cases I've seen where items were reported stolen, it was bc the guest lost it and assumed it was the maid.

I'm going to have to agree with Gringation - locks on the suitcase are just fine, but remember to lock the things you value most up!!

Also, if you are going to buy a Louis (not Louie...hehe)... I would recommend doing it in the States as the tax is lower there. I'm also almost completely sure that the cost is a little less in the States as well given the exchange rate and everything. Trust me, this is a subject I know...

I agree you are overpacking. Are you going for a week or so or for a month? You need a carry on with one pocket book that is not too expensive in case you attract the eye of some thief for your expnsive bag. Pack light since most of the things you will bring will probably go unworn. Remember you are out on the beach or the pool all day. Its only at night you need some clothing and its the tropics so you do not need anything heavy.

I agree with Elle, a Louis will definitely cost more here than in the U.S. I keep tabs on bag prices here and there. If it's not overpriced here, then it's fake. Buy it at home.

    haha i like this idea!!!

Thanks for the happy birthday wish love!! so sweet!!! hehe.... Yeah I dont bring anything at all with me to the club..... i only bring my id and money and CoCoa and FeFe carry them for me. I just bought a cheap-o purse for nights out..... It's still a pretty Guess purse.... but at least if it's gets stolen out of my suitcase or the room its not like i'm losing too much money lol.

Ohh okay! Yeah the safes always look super small to me! I mean I always bring my laptop too but i stick it in the zippered lining of my suitcase and they never find it. That's pretty neat, i wasn't even thinking about their cards! Great thinking! Thanks!

Okay! Thanks!!! I just bought a purse for the nights out.... but I still want my louie as my birthday gift!!! hehe I work too hard to not be able to treat myself here and there!!! hehe... yes I know it's Louis Vuitton but we just call them Louie's or Lou's here. :) Sometimes even Viti's. Weird, I know! lol.

Hehe Thats what I usually pack for 7 days and i honestly use everything!!!
When I go to the airport, I don't use a purse at all. Just my wheely carry on bag and a pink book bag. I'm not worried at all about being mugged or having something stolen downtown.... only from my room. I've just been hearing about more and more cases! A lot of times I pack my suitcase about 2 weeks before. Go through my list of 14 days and see what is truly un-needed. Sometimes to take things out is truly heartwrenching.... but i do it and it ends up okay. hahahaha I must pack and repack 12 times before i leave! Crazy! but i swear that drops my luggage down about 10 lbs.
hhehe.... yeah I usually at the beach and pool all day.... but most days we go downtown, isla mujeres, playa del carmen, etc. This year we are trying to plan an ultra long day trip to Belize to go cave tubing! sounds scary but fun! cave-Tubing.com. This is trip 5 for me this year and I couldn't be more excited! I could scream I'm so excited! lol.... now if i could just use that excitement to get my fat arse on the tready(treadmill) lol. Thanks for your help love!!!!

haha good to know! I will plan on buying here then!!! Thank you sooo much!!

    Thanks everyone!!

I hope everyone comign down has a safe, exciting, wonderful trip! <3
