Oh dont take me the wrong way. I know you both dont intend to make any profit, maybe your friend doesn't make a profit either Tori. But when tour companies get involved (as seems to be the case for Chichen Itza) they dont just offer up their transport and a driver for a day from the kindness of their heart - they do it to make money.

both places are totally charming... my fav ever is isla mujeres, its just magical, u can ask hammie... we had such a great time last year!!!!! playa is cool but its a bit more laid back i think
