Following recent attempts at making curry, which went very well, I decided i needed a curry fix, without going to the hassle of doing all the spices and stuff, so i went to checkout those sauces that someone mentioned before from Walmart Superama (next to the new Sams Club on the way to the airport), well we went there last week and we got a Tikka Massala for 49 pesos, tried it and it was very good, as they are the asda 'extra special' range, great with rice, poppadum type crisps from Liverpool and warm sliced bolillos with garlic butter. So being quite impressed we went back to get more on Saturday and we were very pleased to find they are offering all of those sauces, which include - Dopiaza, Balti, Madras, Tikka Massala, Korma and Chinese Sweet and Sour, 2 for the bargain price of 40 pesos! We bought 8 but there was tons left on the shelf. They go off in Feb 2010 so get in there fast. Now if they only had baked beans, I would buy their entire supply.
Feb 2010 is a real short sell by date. I'm also worried that the sale means they're discontinuing them, as they did with the really great Asda jams and fruit preserves they used to stock but don't seem to have anymore.
That stuff stays ok for years as long as you dont open it. We still have sauces that expired in 2007 that are fine.
I'm hoping they just over ordered last time and they'll just get a smaller order in next time, be sad if they discontinued them, i mean why not get half the stock over to Walmart in centro, my guess is that they would probably sell better there even at the original price than at Superama which is so out of the way. On another note, that Europea shop over there is rubbish, didn't see one thing in that shop i'd want to buy, why can't they order in English supermarket stuff, like Baked Beans, Sauces, Poppadums, Gravy, Hams, Chicken with stuffing, Pitta Breads, Sweets, Chocolates, Appletise, Orange and Cherry Tango, PG Tips, Yorkshire Tea, Biscuits etc.. etc...
Have you ever tried Commercial Mexicana, the huge shop, in Centro? I'm just wondering because a friend who owns a restaurant gets terrific things there and she has a Thai, French, Mediterranean type place.
Thanks for the tip off Sam. They are 13 jars lighter now after we made a trip over this afternoon. Don't worry still plenty left. On the way back we stopped off at the Turkish Kebab place on Kabah for a lamb doner which was far better than I ever imagined it would be.
HAHAHA, Sam, la Europea is not "la Inglaterra" :icon_biggrin:. I have found goose foie gras (which is NOT pate), I will tell you, from a French point of view, if it is good. Nobody knows anything about chocolate in Cancun, not even la casa del chocolate at Kukulkan Plaza, where I went once, and will never go again. And I bring my tea from France every year (Yunnan). At least, the Americans living here can find some things they are used to. I love curry, but more in a London restaurant. Oh, and.... I enjoyed the thread dedicated to recipes, you men are good :aktion033:
If you need a curry fix i recomend a trip to "La Isla", right beside the thai restaurant they built an indian joint called "Elefanta" (its hard to find but park on the second parking structure and walk towards macdonalds and stay beside the water). Spicy Chicken Vindaloo with Naan bread!! I recomend saving up a little since portions are small & pricey!
Over-priced, under-sized portions and a disappointment in terms of available menu choices. You could have just as good (probably better) a meal in an albeit less glamorous location at Taste of India on Tulum or, provided the owner is in the kitchen, Taj Mahal on Ave del Sol for far less money.
