Are the police in Cancun generally friendly and helpful towards tourists?

Do they try to scam you in order to make a few dollars raise?

If so, what is the best thing to do in that case?

in all honesty, the best thing to do is not to break the law....if you can stick to that you'll be good. They can be helpful when needed though with my experiences. But as is the case anywhere, if you do something wrong, they will treat you as if you've done something wrong

    thats fine,

I dont intend on breaking the law, lol.

I was just wondering if they may try tourist scam tactics just to get you to cough up a few dollars

oh right, ive heard stories of people who did something wrong and were approached by the policia and they demanded some money, bubble gum and a few other things in order to not be taken to jail...so they gave it to them and got away scottfree lol

had a bit of a run-in myself... they didn't take me to jail, but they took all the cash i had on me, my camera, and dropped me off someplace downtown.

don't break the law...that includes peeing in public

I went with a couple of friends in to cancun back in 2008. We got pulled over for making a U turn infront of the Fiesta Americana Resort anyways the police officer said he was going to take my driver license and pay a fee at the station. Then he said to just give him 40 bucks on the side and we could go so we did and that was it.. Another time we were talking to one of the guys that carry you in one of those carts you sit on and the cops pulled up and harrassed us assuming we were trying to buy drugs..

According to friends that vacation a lot as tourist informed me that as a tourist you cannot be stopped or harrassed by cops period unless ofcourse if you start a fight or are involved in illegal activity..

The law there states that as a tourist they cannot harrass you or mess with you period and they are not allowed inside the resorts. You can go to the US Embassy there and make a report. If the problem is serious

don't pee / throw up in the lagoon, don't stagger around like a complete piss head, and don't talk to hookers. ... other than that, just keep it legal and you'll be fine!
